You must go in there some time...

Between a once fairly regular jar around Croston and a mate in Ormskirk, I’d guess I trundled past the Midge Hall pub on the outskirts of Leyland a good 20 or 30 times a year from the early 1990s.

Each time thinking: ‘That looks a decent pub. Must go in there some time.’

Lovely looking place. All immaculate hanging baskets and ivy. A well-maintained, traditional English country pub. Sitting picture postcard perfect by a signal box, the white wooden gate of a level crossing, and what remains of the little station closed by Dr Beeching in 1961.

‘Really must go in there.’

Never did. Opportunity never presented itself. One move of town later, stopped trundling by on the train too.

Anyhow, ran past said pub towards the back-end of last year. Following a circuitous unplanned route, well off my beaten track , came upon me out of the blue upon rounding a bend.

‘Oh that place. That still open? Looks decent. Must go in there some time.’

Ran past several times since. Always cruelly early in the morning, so never able to stop in for a welcome glass.Always thinking: ‘That looks a decent etc.’

Decades in which this idle thought has recurred and not been acted upon.

Then, for no reason other than that I had been asked to write this review, I seized the moment.

And went in there.

Very nice it is too. Cosy and comfortable inside, with a small but well chosen ale selection and a nice line in food (several hearty and sorely coveted plates floated by while I was at the bar).

Out back, a spacious beer garden with tables, play-bits for the nippers and a boules pit for visiting French proved the perfect location for post-work libation.

Will be back there some time soon.
