You know that sinking feeling – you’ve just got back from a family weekend away and are looking forward to getting back to your home comforts when you realise that there’s no food in the fridge and the cupboards are bare.

Happily, that’s precisely the reason why takeaways were invented and we decided to grab a Chinese takeaway to stave off our hunger.

This was actually easier said than done as the first two Chinese takeaways we headed to proved fruitless as the first Chinese we went to was closed while the second looked like it had closed down.

Luckily, it was third time lucky when we noticed Zhen Zhen, a Chinese we had not frequented before.

Always a sucker for a special offer, my eye was attracted by the tempting Monday to Wednesday deal of ‘Three dishes for £14’ which was great as it meant a meal each for me and hubby and another for our eight-year-old twins to share.

As we were extra hungry, we also ordered two portions of chicken and sweetcorn soup to share between the four of us.

The soup was delicious and just as Chinese soup should be and was full of flavour and packed with large chunks of chicken.

I ordered chicken in black bean sauce which was delicious and had lots of tender chicken in it as well as a variety of fresh vegetables. Hubby’s kung po chicken was also a success and he loved the balance of spice with a sweet undercurrent.

Our children love prawns and all things seafood and were thrilled with the Chinese curry packed with juicy king prawns and our son described his meal as “scrummy” while our daughter enthused: “This is the best Chinese curry I have ever had.”

To accompany our meals, we ordered a combination of fried rice (30p extra on the deal) and chips and there was food galore on our plates.

Even better, we received a free portion of prawn crackers for placing an order over £10 as well as a free portion of tasty pineapple fritters for going over the £20 mark.

At just over £20 for a proper feast, we feel thrilled to have discovered this gem of a takeaway and will certainly be visiting again soon.
