17 amazing pictures of Carleton’s new bar Gilberts in former doctor’s surgery

A new cafe bar - Gilberts - has opened and is set to bring coffee, cakes, and live music to Carleton, as entrepreneur Tim Wood transforms the former Wellbeing Centre into a vibrant community hub for day and night visitors.

Tonight marked the much‑anticipated opening of Gilberts at 9 Castle Gardens Crescent, a former GP practice, as locals gathered to welcome the town’s newest social hub.

Owner Tim Wood greeted first visitors with steaming coffees and sweet treats, then ushered in the evening with a glass of bubbly and live music to kick off what he hopes will become Carleton’s go‑to spot for both daytime catch‑ups and lively nights out.

Owner of Gilbert’s, Tim said: “I was a manager at Carleton Bowling Club for the last 13 years. A friend of mine bought the old doctor’s surgery about two months ago and asked if I’d be interested in leasing part of the building to set up my own venture. I said yes straight away, and that’s how we got started.”

Tim Wood hopes the new bar will help to rejuvenate Carleton’s night-time economy, particularly as new housing developments bring more residents to the area.

"We’re trying to revive Carleton and offer something new to the area. There are some great bars around, and we hope to complement them while bringing something different. “We want to create a vibrant spot for residents.

“We’re planning at least one live music night each month.”
