Preston has been enjoying clear skies and soaring temperatures since the start of the week and, whenever we have a run of high temperatures, it brings back memories of the summer of 1976.
Taking hold in late June, the heatwave lasted until the end of August, with the hottest day hitting 35.9C and England and Wales experiencing a 16 week dry spell.
Reservoirs dropped to dangerously low levels, rivers dried up, roads melted and railway tracks buckled under the searing heat.
Even though modern heatwaves have actually produced higher peaks, with the UK record now standing at 40.3C, the mammoth run of hot weather in 1976 still sets it apart.
