True Northern grit shone through as England's best school cross country runners ploughed through the mud at Preston in search of national glory. Competitors from the old red rose county - now Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside - had a field day in testing conditions at William Temple School. Teams from the North West came out on top in all six age group races

Three Morecambe High Schoolgirls have gone potty over snooker star Stephen Hendry. They spent two months writing one hundred thousand and one 'pleases' on a lengthy love letter to their hero. And the method behind their madness paid off when the Scottish player agreed to meet them in honour of their wrist-aching exploits. The meeting took place in Preston, where 19-year-old Stephen is appearing in the qualifying rounds of snooker's world championships.
