Preston Sea Cadets won the top awards in the Inter Service Cadet Forces' rifle shooting championships at Bisley. A total of 140 teams took part in the event in which Air Training Corps and Army Cadets from all part of Britain competed. In the individual cadet hundred competition, the Preston cadets won 10 of the 16 awards

TV comedian Les Dennis couldn't resist entertaining crowds with his Coronational Street impersonation of shy Mavis Riley. The screen funnyman was taking a break from his summer show at Blackpool's North Pier to open a charity garden party in Coniston Road, Fulwood

It wasn't exactly Wembley, but the police presence was just as strong for a junior schools soccer tournament. Not that anyone was expecting trouble, it was simply that the venue for the football competition was the Lancashire police headquarters at Hutton, near Preston. Out of twenty teams of youngsters Chaucer Junior School in Fleetwood were crowned the winners and walked off with the NatWest Trophy after a 4-1 victory over St Mary's Junior School from Burnley.
