The flats in Avenham comprise of a number of high-rise blocks – Richmond, Lincoln and Carlisle House - and many smaller flats dotted around the area. They were built in the 1960s and are still standing in the Queen Street estate of Preston. With these images we look at the changing face of the flats over the years. In 1981 residents in the high-rise Penrith House flats in Avenham felt their homes shake as the large stone barriers fell 10 feet on to a walkway below. Controversial Avenham tower blocks - 17-storey Kendal House and Penrith House - were up for sale in 1982 following the collapse of a scheme to turn them into student accommodation.
