Sadly that is no longer the case as it has been revealed that the number of pubs in England and Wales has fallen below 40,000 for the first time and that there are 7,000 fewer than a decade ago. We’ve been through our archives and found pictures of a number hostelries that have disappeared from the Preston landscape over the years – some have been demolished, many turned into flats – but they will always live on in our memories. What do you remember about these once great pubs? Let us know – [email protected]. READ MORE: Boozy trip down Meadow Street. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Popular Preston pubs. A pub since around 1839, the Lime Kiln sat proudly on Aqueduct Street. It traded as the Lime Kiln until its closure in 2008 and was then converted into a Chinese restaurant. But it lay empty from 2014. The building has been plagued by problems (not whilst trading as the Lime Kiln pub it must be noted). It was once described as a 'ticking time bomb' after leaking gas bottles were found close to botched electrical work. And in 2018 a cannabis farm was discovered at the premises. Then last year a fire ripped through the empty building and it has subsequently been torn down Photo: Ian Robinson

The Unicorn Pub, on North Road called last orders in August 2017 after 200 years of pulling pints. It was previously the Cattle Market Tavern after the livestock mart which operated next door, but later changed its name to the Unicorn after the market was replaced by a school and terraced streets. It is currently being redeveloped into serviced apartments intended for short-term use Photo: David Hurst
