Blackpool's Illuminations to shine into 2021

Plans to keep the Illuminations on into the New Year for the first time in history are back on!

The world-famous Lights were switched off when national lockdown measures brought the tourist economy to a grinding halt earlier this month.

But council chiefs have today confirmed the Golden Mile will sparkle once more from December 2, when the restrictions are lifted.

While it remains to be seen exactly how many resort businesses will be able to reopen, with a decision on which tier Blackpool will be placed in due today, the resort is ramping up its plans for the festive season.

It comes after The Gazette reported last week on plans to give traders one last chance to recoup some of their losses after a tumultuous 2020.

Blackpool Council has announced new Christmas lighting displays in the town centre and a 40ft tree in St John’s Square, delivered in association with the Blackpool BID (business improvement district). The displays will run nightly until January 3.

Coun Gillian Campbell, cabinet member for tourism and culture, said: “This is about giving our local residents some much-needed festive cheer.

“Months of restrictions have put a dampener on a large part of this year. The return of the Illuminations complemented by a significant investment in town centre lighting will definitely help lift the mood in the run-up to Christmas.”

Michael Williams, chair of the BID, added: “We are delighted to be supporting the new-look Christmas lights in the town centre.

“Given the circumstances of this year, it is important that our town centre businesses get the best possible chance to recoup some of the losses incurred during lockdown in the run-up to Christmas. We encourage everyone in Blackpool to shop local and support our retailers.”
