So what is life like for those in quarantine in the North West?

What is the accommodation like?

Patients have praised their temporary homes inside the quarantined block, with some likening it to "staying in a hotel".

Nurses had been staying in the block but were forced to leave to make way for the Brits returning from China.

The seven-storey block was even given a much-needed clean, with the building's cladding scrubbed of its weathered grime before their arrival.

Prior to their arrival, Arrowe Park received mass deliveries of electrical appliances.

Families and couples are allowed to stay together in their own suites, but some patients who travelled alone have been allocated rooms in suites with others.

Each suite contains a number of bedrooms and a private bathroom, as well as a small kitchen and a living room.

The kitchens are equipped with fridge freezer, microwave, cooker, kettle, dishwasher and washing machines.

Deliveries of KFC and Domino's Pizza appear to be among the fast food of choice for some patients.

Delivery drivers loaded with boxes of hot takeaway food have be seen handing the orders to security staff at the cordon around the accommodation block.

Fridge freezers inside each apartment has been stocked with microwave meals, such as chicken curry and chilli con carne.

For breakfast, patients are given a choice of cereals, including Kellog's Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies, as well as porridge and fresh fruit.

Residents' diets are carefully catered for and food is cooked and prepared to their requirements.

Can patients leave their rooms?

Patients are not isolated to their rooms and are free to roam the halls and communal areas of the accommodation block.

There is a large communal area where the temporary residents can mingle and eat together.

But everyone must wear face masks at all times when outside their own rooms.

And to avoid cabin fever, residents are allowed to venture outside, under supervision, to enjoy some fresh air in the cordoned off hospital grounds.

The grounds are secured by 6ft metal fencing and police patrol the perimeter 24/7.

They are also allowed to open the windows in their apartments to allow fresh air to circulate.

Matt Raw, from Knutsford, Cheshire, is in quarantine with his wife and mother.

He said: "We're allowed to have contact with anyone within the facility, as long as we're wearing face masks.

"There is an outside area where we can actually go outside and get some fresh air.

"We can also open the windows and get some fresh air."

Deliveries are also being allowed into the block from family and friends of those in quarantine.

The 93 people currently in quarantine at Arrowe Park Hospital have to stay in the centre for 14 days, but efforts are being made to prevent them becoming restless.

To avoid boredom creeping in, toys, televisions and radios have been sent in.

Dolls, action figures, Xbox, Nintendo and Playstation consoles have been handed out to children.

Residents are also allowed to keep their phones and have access to wifi. They are free to call, text and use their phones as normal.

In the main communal area, residents can socialise and enjoy meals together.

There is also a pool table, though this appears to be used as a table for distributing supplies.

What do patients think of their accommodation?

Matt Raw said: "If you imagine the best hotel you've ever stayed in and the best service you could every possibly imagine, these guys at the NHS just wipe the floor with the lot of them.

"There's an army of people here who are looking after us really well.

"They've brought us televisions, radios, you name it, anything we've asked for, they've brought for us.

"We can order food from the concierge service to be sent in.

"We have everything we need. Pretty much everything we ask for, they go out and they obtain them for us in a flash."

Matt even ordered a ring for his wife Ying's birthday brought in from a jewellers in Cheshire.

The couple celebrated with a cake and a bottle of sparkling wine.

"It's almost like a student accommodation flat", added Kharn Lambert, a PE teacher from Lancaster, speaking from inside the facility.

"It reminds me of when I was back at university.

"It's quite a surreal situation."

Why Arrowe Park and why the North West?

Britain is well equipped to deal with infectious diseases, with two high secure units located at the Royal Free Hospital in London and the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

So why has the government chosen the Wirral - 40 miles from Preston - to quarantine people?
