Hospital trust sued over Preston baby with cerebral palsy

The claim has been brought by the mother of the boy who blames his condition on delays when he was born.

Papers issued at London’s High Court and recently made public claim her son could have avoided all injury if he had been delivered earlier at Sharoe Green Hospital in Preston where he was born on 10 May 2004.

The mother, who comes from Preston, claims in the court papers that the hospital, which has since closed, should have kept her in hospital when she was briefly admitted on May 4 with high blood pressure, reduced foetal movements and an abnormal baby’s heart rate.

She claims that but for the alleged negligence staff would have diagnosed pregnancy induced hypertension, which restricted her baby’s growth.

The papers say that at that stage he would have been delivered by immediate emergency caesarean section or within 24 hours, and that this would have avoided him being born with cerebral palsy and all the lifelong complications that go with it.

Instead he was born six days later, needed immediate resuscitation and was suffering from seizures, breathing problems and other issues.

The child was born at Sharoe Gren Hospital, which closed in 2004.

A spokesman at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: ““The Trust is aware of this claim and is considering it with its legal advisers. The Trust will be responding to the claim but will not be commenting further at this time”.
