Sue Reed, nursing director of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals said: “We have long recognised that good nutrition is absolutely vital to aiding recovery from illness and injury, and are confident we are already meeting these new standards.”

She added: “ “We screen patients when they arrive in hospital to identify anyone who is malnourished, or at risk of malnutrition, and our specialist nutrition team develops personal nutrition plans to ensure those patients’ individual needs are met.

“We understand the importance of protecting mealtimes so that patients can eat without interruption, and this also enables staff to provide support to anyone who needs it. Specially adapted cutlery and crockery is also available for every ward.”

Most of the Trust’s meals are prepared in the hospital kitchens - using seasonal foods -and specials dishes are served up for patients with special dietary needs.

Patient ratings are higher than the national average.
