Hide AdThe "Clap for Carers" came at 5pm, led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. And it followed last night's candlelit tribute to those who have died during the Covid-19 crisis.
Mr Johnson encouraged the public to get behind the tribute "for those who have worked tirelessly and selflessly to help the nation through this pandemic."
He also entertained a group of NHS staff in the garden at 10 Downing Street this afternoon as part of the birthday celebrations.
It is hoped today's NHS anniversary applause will become an annual event.
