Joseph was taken ill around three weeks ago and taken into hospital by ambulance.

His family feared the worst when coronavirus was confirmed.

But after an uncertain time, widower Joseph recovered and has now been returned to the care home.

His grandson Lee Calderbank, of Wigan, said: “We couldn’t go in to see him of course when he was in hospital.

“We were all worried and ringing every day to see how he was.

"Now he has been sent home.

“We couldn’t believe it, but he is a real warrior.”

The Highfield Road care home is now in lockdown in common with other care homes around the UK.

But relatives have been making video calls to him.

Lee said: “He has had the best care at the hospital, and the care home is superb too.

“We still haven’t been able to see him, but on facetime he is wondering why he can’t go to the pub.

“He says he is feeling much better now – he is enjoying his whisky again!”
