Preston school pupils book a novel place in the world record books

Youngsters at Fulwood Academy linked up with more than 6,000 others around the UK last month in a bid to stage the biggest ever book quiz.

Now officials from the Guinness Book of World Records have ratified the attempt as a global best and hinted it may find its way into the 2017 edition of their iconic publication.

“The children are delighted – not everyone can claim to be a world record holder,” said academy librarian Robin Crawshaw.

“It was really positive to see a group of students with such a passion and interest in books taking part in this record attempt and showing what a good knowledge of literature they have.”

Finnbarr Graham, assistant principal for curriculum and assessment, added: “Engaging students in literacy is fundamental to their success and progress in school. Participating in this national quiz was a fun and interactive way of encouraging our students to read and raise the profile of such an important skill.”

The record attempt came as part of the celebrations for World Book Day. The previous best for “the most people participating in simultaneous literature quizzes” was 2,679.

The new record didn’t just beat it, it smashed it, with 6,388 confirmed as having taken part.

Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of the Guinness World Records book, said: “Nothing makes us happier than children and book worms of all ages being united through two common goals: a love of reading and the will to become Guinness World Records title holders. Huge congratulations to World Book Day and everybody that took part.”
