Pedal power will aid Amy's volunteer plan

Cardinal Newman College student Amy Draper is planning to cycle to the capital to help fund on a gap year teaching under-privileged children in Guyana.

Amy will fly to South American in August to volunteer in a school through Project Trust. As the experience costs more than £6,000, the 17-year-old from Penwortham is fund-raising to cover flights, accommodation and insurance.

Along with her dad Jeff, 54, she will spend three days riding from Preston to London on cycles provided by Leisure Lakes Bikes.

Amy, who hopes to go to Lancaster University next year, said: “I will be living in a small village in the Amazon Rainforest.

“I chose a smaller, remote community so that my work will truly make an impact and I will get to know the children not only through teaching, but also through after school activities and community events.

She will be responsible for teaching local children, who would not otherwise receive an education housed in a one-classroom school with only a chalkboard and desks.

Amy has previously volunteered with children for Barnardos, National Citizenship Service and Leyland PlayScheme.

Other fund-raising initiatives include cake sales and pub quizzes.
