Lytham school's virtual concert is a classic hit

If music is the food of love then the airwaves were awash with harmony when pupils from a Lytham school decided to spread a little happiness.

Staff and pupils at AKS Lytham were determined to make sure their annual summer concert did not become a victim of coronavirus.

So, they decided to take advantage of social media and make the radio waves buzz by staging their first virtual summer concert.

The event was premiered on Facebook with an audience of 140 watching live, with many more watching later, or catching up on You Tube.

Despite not being together due to social distancing restrictions, the AKS community rallied and came alive with more than 340 comments between parents, students and staff as the audience gave their appreciation to the young musicians.

Michael Waterhouse, director of performing arts said: “I was so impressed with how our students rose to the challenge of remote learning in music and produced some truly outstanding work.

“It was particularly heart-warming to see the students supporting each other, complimenting, and cheering each other on.”

Neither the students nor staff had been able to physically rehearse together but put on a roof-raising show.

The event started with a solo piano performance, Rosemary’s Waltz setting the standard for the evening.

Other pieces including performances from the Virtual Choir, including the showstopping Million Dre-ams from the Greatest Showman and classical guitar and swing band pieces before the Year 8

band, 8:Fifteen changed tempo with Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now.

The concert ended with a piano solo, entitled So Long.
