Lancaster specialist college student takes first step towards dream marine career with placement at Lakes Aquarium

Arran, a student at Beaumont College in Lancaster, part of Salutem Care and Education, has taken an exciting step towards his dream career of working with marine life after securing a work placement at Lakes Aquarium.
Arran joined Beaumont College in September 2025 with a clear ambition: to one day work at the aquarium in Plymouth. With the support of job coach Vickie Clegg and employability lead Rosie Talbot, a hands-on opportunity was arranged with the nearby Lakes Aquarium at Newby Bridge. Arran was invited for an informal interview and tour, where his enthusiasm made an immediate impression.
After several conversations with aquarium team members Beth Nortley and Gary Hicks, Arran was delighted to be offered a placement and a confirmed start date.
On his first day, he was warmly welcomed and given his own work experience uniform before diving straight into the tasks ahead. Arran completed a practice census, helped with stock rotation in the gift shop, swept up, and even emptied bins – all with an enthusiastic smile and plenty of questions for the team.

He also shared his passion for recycling and protecting wildlife from pollution, discussing ideas for raising awareness both at college and within the local community. He has already arranged to meet with Milly, the aquarium’s conservation lead, to explore how Beaumont College can support local conservation initiatives.
Reflecting on his first day, Arran said, “They’ve kept me on my toes today!”
Vickie Clegg commented: “Arran has entered the working world with enthusiasm and impact. Lakes Aquarium has provided the perfect opportunity for him to develop the skills and confidence needed for future employment. His passion for animals and commitment to protecting the environment really shine through.”
Lorraine Jones, Lead Tutor at Beaumont College, said: **“At Beaumont College, we’re proud to work with a wide range of employers to provide meaningful work placements that align with each student’s individual goals, educational journey and career aspirations. These partnerships are invaluable in helping our students gain real-world experience, develop confidence and put their learning into practice.

“Alongside their placements, students work towards an employability qualification which demonstrates their skills, knowledge and professionalism, enhancing their CVs and preparing them for the next steps in their careers.”**
Beth Nortley from Lakes Aquarium added: “It was an absolute delight to have Arran’s help yesterday, his enthusiasm is contagious. We’re so pleased to be able to support him as he takes his first steps into the world of work.”
Arran’s mum, Claire, said: “I’m so proud of Arran. Seeing him so excited and confident about his placement means the world to us. He is really chuffed to be working at the Aquarium and thank you very much to everyone involved for making this happen. Arran has really enjoyed his first few weeks and is looking forward to the rest of his time there.”
Work placements like Arran’s form a key part of the learning experience at Beaumont College, which supports students with a wide range of physical and learning impairments. These opportunities allow students to put their skills into practice, build confidence, and work towards their individual aspirations.
Beaumont College’s employment lead Rosie Talbot, who helped coordinate the placement, said: “It’s been wonderful to see Arran’s confidence grow through this experience. He’s shown real determination to follow his dreams, and we’re grateful to Lakes Aquarium for being such a supportive partner.”
