GCSE grades down from 2021 record high

Top grades for GCSEs are down on last year – but remain higher than pre-pandemic levels, as UK students received their results on Thursday.

In 2021, the proportion of GCSE entries awarded top grades surged to an all-time high after exams were cancelled for the second year in a row due to Covid-19 and pupils were given results determined by their teachers.

Similar to the pattern with A-level results, published last week, it had been expected that grades would drop below last year, but remain above those from 2019 as students returned to sitting exams for the first time in three years.

Figures published by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) – covering GCSE entries from students predominantly in England, Wales and Northern Ireland – showed top grades of 7/A have fallen from 28.9% in 2021 to 26.3% this year, a drop of 2.6 percentage points.

But this remains higher than the equivalent figure for 2019 of 20.8%.

County Councillor Jayne Rear, Lancashire County Council's cabinet member for education and skills has issued a statement to Lancashire pupils receiving results today.

County Councillor Jayne Rear, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for education and skills said: “Our ambition in Lancashire is for all children and young people to reach their full potential, regardless of where their starting point is.

“Maintaining those high standards was always going to be a difficult task for this year group, who are the first to sit formal exams since the start of the pandemic.

“Our GCSE results this year demonstrate the incredible resilience our pupils have shown throughout the pandemic, and they deserve to be justifiably proud of themselves.

“I’d like to congratulate and thank our pupils for all their hard work, and I would also like to thank our teaching staff for supporting our children through this immensely challenging period.”

The council adds that young people are urged to contact the college or further education provider they had planned to attend if they did not receive the grades they needed, to discuss the options available to them.

They can also contact Talkzone, in confidence, for advice and support.

Young people can call Talkzone on 0800 511 111, text on 07786 511 111 or email [email protected]

“I also want to thank our brilliant teaching profession – and of course parents and carers – for all they have done to ensure young people can progress onto the next stage of their lives.
