In a rush to beat the clock before schools shut down on Friday, pupils at Highfield Academy handed out messages of kindness to vulnerable members of the local community

The ‘Highfield Helpers’, a group dedicated to creating positive change in South Shore, has created 17 weeks’ worth of community keeping in touch postcards for people isolated during the pandemic.

The schoolchildren hand wrote postcards filled with messages of hope which were delivered by staff from Blackpool Coastal Housing with flowers to people living in sheltered accommodation.

Nicola Dodgson, director of progress at Highfield, said she was extremely proud of how pupils had pulled together to help the local community.

She said: "Our pupils have worked incredibly hard to convey this simple message of human kindness to people who might be struggling due to the effects of coronavirus.

"They have shown a great deal of maturity in their understanding of how devastating this virus may be to older and more vulnerable sections of our community.

"At a time when so many are worried and anxious, their ability to think of others is truly inspiring."

Academy principal Andrew Galbraith added: "It is important in these times that we continue to support our wider community and we wanted to take this opportunity to spread a little bit of happiness in what might be a difficult time for many.

"We hope that our pupils’ words will provide some comfort to people who may be feeling isolated.”

Schools across the country were closed from Friday for all pupils those of key workers and vulnerable children. Highfield Leadership Academy is continuing to offer support to its pupils and their families through the crisis.
