Fundraising 'Sparkle Day' held at Lancashire schools in memory of Manchester Arena victim Saffie-Rose

Yesterday, schools across Lancashire held a ‘Sparkle Day’ in order to raise money for a charity set up in memory of Manchester Arena victim Saffie-Rose Roussos.

On what would have been Saffie’s 14th birthday, the day was held to raise funds for The Sparkle Bean Trust, a new charity that aims to support primary schools with advice and grants following the sudden death of a pupil.

The charity was born out of the experiences of Tarleton Community Primary School, following the loss of their pupil Saffie, and the subsequent trauma they say “engulfed them”.

Tarleton says the aim of ‘Sparkle Day’ was primarily to raise money for the charity, but also to allow “teachers and children to focus on having fun and celebrating the innocence of childhood”, by providing “a fantastic way to come together to raise money for a good cause and remember a young life in a positive way."

Schools mainly took part by holding fundraising ‘wear what you like days’ (although bringing something sparkly was ideal), but other suggested ideas included a fun run, car wash or raffles.

For their Sparkle Day, Tarleton held numerous half hour dance-a-thons, as well as a sparkle cafe for the wider community in the afternoon.

Headteacher, Chris Upton said: “I just wanted to thank everybody for their support for our first Sparkle Day. It is always great to have our community come together - it has been a great day!”

To donate to the charity, you can send money to sort code: 01-00-53, account number: 12757489, or issue a cheque to The Sparkle Bean Trust, c/o Tarleton Community Primary School, Hesketh Lane, Tarleton, Lancashire PR4 6AT.
