Students from Corpus Christi Catholic High in Fulwood have been trialling a new free weekly art club run by the University of Central Lancashire.

It has only just started, but the club is already booked up.

Running every week until Easter, the Art and Design Saturday Club is for 13-16 year-olds eager to develop their artistic skills, including drawing, painting and sculpting. It is the only free club of its kind in Lancashire.

It is part of the National Saturday Club initiative, set up four years ago to give teens a taste of what it would be like to study after school.

UCLan fine art lecturer Jayne Simpson and Andrew McDonald, a senior lecturer in 3D media fine art, are leading the UCLan sessions.

Andrew said: “It’s been an instant hit with places being filled almost as soon as the club was announced.

"It’s like a mini art school and everything we produce will go to the National Saturday Club summer show in London.

"The young people will be able to try their hands at ceramics, painting, sculpting and drawing, among other things.”

Corpus Christi pupils had a taster session and Zahra Abbas,15, said: “It’s great to have the time to focus on being creative. I think this is a fantastic initiative.”
