A level grades soaring

LANCASHIRE'S students are proving they are top class as they mark another year of outstanding A Level results.

It’s a record-breaking year at Preston’s Cardinal Newman College, with not just an overall A Level pass rate of 100 per cent to toast but also an outstanding 73 per cent of students achieving high grades and 100 per cent high grades in 30 subjects. It has also been a record for Oxbridge applicants, with 16 Newman students being accepted on to their places to study on subjects ranging from medicine and languages to economics .

Runshaw College was also expecting another bumper year for high grades across a range of subjects.

At Hutton Grammar School just under half of all grades awarded were at A* to B and nearly one in five was either a gold mark A* or A grade.

Four of the Liverpool Road school’s upper sixth formers; Elizabeth Ainsworth, Matthew Farrier, Daniel Timmers and David Tipping all achieved five A Level passes.

New headteacher Mark Bradshaw said: “Once again we are delighted with the achievements of our students and there have been some exceptional results.

“Many students have achieved top grades and are now progressing to university. Students and staff have worked incredibly hard over the past year and we are really proud.”

Over at Carr Hill High in Kirkham, students are celebrating a 99 per cent exam pass rate. As the Sixth Form Centre marked another year of impressive pass rates, core subjects such as chemistry, English and modern foreign languages notched up a 100 percent pass rates for students achieving the top grades.
