‘Shear’ determination on display as pupils brave the shave to raise £1,800 for St John’s Hospice

Two courageous Year 11 pupils from Bay Leadership Academy displayed exceptional initiative and compassion by organising their own charity fundraiser in support of St John’s Hospice.
Demonstrating maturity beyond their years, Charlie and Brandon volunteered to sacrifice their treasured tresses by having their heads shaved – all in the name of raising vital funds for a cause close to their hearts.
St John’s Hospice is a local charity which provides free palliative care to patients with life shortening conditions in North Lancashire, South Lakes and parts of North Yorkshire. Over the years, several of the pupils’ loved ones have received critical care and support from this community organisation, inspiring Charlie and Brandon to take action and give back to this worthy cause.
From planning and promotion to rallying support from peers and staff, the Year 11 boys took full ownership of the fundraiser. Their bold decision to lose their locks drew admiration from the school community, who gathered to support the event held on the school grounds. Amid rapturous cheers and applause, two beloved teachers stepped up to wield the clippers, adding a personal touch and encouraging greater participation and donations from pupils and staff alike.

While the initiative was pupil-driven, the school proudly supported the campaign by helping spread the word through assemblies and social media, amplifying the message and attracting generous contributions from families and the wider community. Thanks to this teamwork and generosity, the boys raised an impressive £1,800 for St John’s Hospice, helping to fund essential care and support for patients and their families at one of the most difficult times in their lives.
Lee Waring, Principal at Bay Leadership Academy, said:
“Everyone is incredibly proud of Charlie and Brandon for their bravery and commitment to making a difference. Their actions are a true reflection of the STAR values that the school strives to instil in all pupils – Service, Teamwork, Ambition and Respect – and stand as an inspiring example of how young people can lead with compassion and make a positive impact in their community.”
