West Coast rail chaos after signalling problems

There was major disruption on West Coast inter-city rail services through Lancashire tonight after a fault with the signalling system between Glasgow Central and Carlisle.

Train operator Virgin said all services into Scotland were affected.

Virgin said at around 5pm that both lines were blocked near Carlisle.

One commuter said on social media it was “utter chaos” at Preston train station tonight.

One report said there had been a fire in the Carlisle aea that had affected signalling.

Virgin said any passengers delayed over 30 minutes could claim.
