The new pizzeria is the latest UK branch of Sbarro, based in New York and will open in the Euro Garages petrol station in Matrix Way, off Dawson Lane.

An opening date has yet to be confirmed, but work is already well under way at the garage, with work expected to be completed in the next few weeks.

The Spar shop inside the petrol station has been cordoned off whilst the Sbarro unit is fitted, and will be reduced in size - possibly by as much as 50% - to make space for it.

What we know so far

The Sbarro outlet will be takeaway only, with no inside seating. An in-house delivery service isn't planned, but customers are expected to be able to order via online delivery services such as JustEat.

The garage also includes a Greggs takeaway, which is not expected to be affected by the opening of Sbarro.

The new pizzeria is the result of a partnership between US-owned Sbarro and Lancashire's own billionaire brothers Zuber and Mohsin Issa, owners of Euro Garages.

Sbarro is famous for is XL New York-style pizza slices, which will be available for takeaway at the Euro Garage petrol station in Matrix Point, Buckshaw Village

The brothers - who recently led the £6.8 billion takeover of Asda - opened the first UK branch of Sbarro at their EG garage in Birmingham last November.

They have since opened a further five branches, with units at garages in Blackburn and Burnley, and more are planned for across the country later this year.

Mohammed Tayab, EG Group’s food & beverage director for Europe, said: "We are excited to partner with Sbarro, a world-renowned pizza brand present in 24 countries who offer excellent choices to diners.

"Their focus on serving authentic New York-style pizza using the freshest ingredients will be a treat to customers looking for a fresh, tasty and convenient offering at one of our locations."

Sbarro chief executive David Karam added: "The partnership with EG Group is very exciting. It’s a natural fit between the two brands.

"While pizza has been a top selling food item in convenience stores for many years, Sbarro offers premium quality pizza, Stromboli and other menu items that are freshly prepared each day in store.

"We pioneered the concept of pizza-by-the-slice in our first location in Brooklyn, New York in 1956, and have retained the made from scratch recipes ever since

"As the trend continues to shift towards freshly prepared and higher quality food offerings in the convenience store segment, Sbarro is an ideal partner for a great brand like EG Group."

The new pizza shop will sell New York-style pizza slices, as well as full-size pizzas and authentic Italian-American Stromboli
