The project increases covered production capacity to protect high-value stock and improve workflow through the seasons.
The new structure features ventilated sides with automated roll-up curtains to support air movement across the bays, valley gutters for efficient rainwater management, and a single roof vent in the centre bay. Positioning the vent at the warmest point allows Palmstead to evaluate performance in real conditions, with the option to retrofit additional roof vents later if required. Irrigation forms part of the overall production system on site and was coordinated alongside the build, although it was not installed by Northern Polytunnels.

“This is a practical, scalable upgrade that gives Palmstead a reliable covered environment and the flexibility to adapt as needs change,” said Jack Wolfenden, Director at Northern Polytunnels. “We are proud to see a Lancashire-built structure supporting one of the country’s most respected nurseries.”
Manufactured in Lancashire and installed to suit Palmstead’s layout, the seven-bay multispan provides a clear, protected working space that supports propagation, hardening-off, and short-term crop holding. The combination of side ventilation, central roof vent trial, and valley gutters is intended to help manage temperature, humidity and runoff through variable UK weather.
Northern Polytunnels designs and manufactures in Lancashire and supplies structures for growers across the UK, from domestic plots to large commercial sites. The company works with nurseries, farms, research facilities and community projects to deliver robust covered growing environments.
