Homelessness charity Emmaus has closed all three of its shops in the city and they will remain closed for the next two weeks as staff self-isolate.

Emmaus is home to a community of formerly homeless people who are provided with a place to live and often work in its shops whilst they receive support and training.

The charity said one of its new members, who only joined its community yesterday (July 29), has tested positive for coronavirus.

Because the new member had not had any contact with customers at this stage, Emmaus said those who visited its stores yesterday and today would not have been affected.

An Emmaus spokesman said: "We have temporarily had to close our shops and suspend collections and deliveries after a confirmed case of coronavirus at our community.

"We would like to reassure customers that there is no chance they would have been affected by this as the person who tested positive only joined our community yesterday and has not had any contact with customers.

"We are working with the relevant authorities to handle the situation and ensure the person receives the care they need.

"Our staff, companions and anyone that has been in close contact will now be isolating for 14 days.

"Unfortunately, this means that all of our shops will remain closed for the next 14 days and deliveries and collections will be suspended for this period.

"We are grateful for your continued support and thank you for bearing with us during this challenging time."

Emmaus has three stores in Preston - a charity shop in Fishergate, its Megastore in the former B&Q in Brookfield Street and a superstore off Ribbleton Lane in Deepdale.
