The refurbishment of the Red Lion in Longton was passed by South Ribble Council last week.

But the owners say they have been forced to review the start of work because of the current lockdown.

“We're delighted planning permission has been granted for a refurbishment of The Red Lion, Longton," said a spokesperson for Heineken-owned Star Pubs and Bars.

"However, in the light of current Covid-19 restrictions, we're reviewing the schedule for refurbishments, so we cannot give a time frame for building work.”

The plans, which include an extension at the rear, were announced at the end of last year, at the same time as Star Pubs revealed they would be doing up their other Longton pub, the Black Bull further up the village's main street.

The company spent a six-figure sum on refurbishments at the Bull earlier this year, but the Red Lion scheme has only just made it through planning.

With public houses closed since March 20 due to the coronavirus outbreak - and with no date given as yet to re-open - Star Pubs say they will have to wait and see what happens before committing to the building work.

The plans show a single storey oak and glass rear extension with a porch entrance, a pergola also at the rear and internal refurbishments to allow the alehouse and live music venue to cater for diners.

More than 50 residents nearby were consulted about the work, yet the council says it did not receive any objections.

In a report to the planning committee, Star Pubs said: "This proposal would not only help to sustain existing local employment, but it will help to ensure the longevity of an established community facility.

"It is not expected to affect neighbouring properties in terms of noise and traffic generation any more than the current situation."

Star Pubs are currently looking for a tenant to take on the pub. The company says it is "set to become the go-to destination pub in the area."
