More bad hair days until stylists can reopen in April

Hairdresser Julie Gee had hoped the Prime Minister would announce a March re-opening for her two salons in his roadmap speech today, but was left disappointed that the doors will have to remain closed until April 12 at the earliest.

Her last customers at the Red Hair Company salon in Manor Lane, Penwortham were on Christmas Eve and she admits: "It's quite depressing not being able to open.

"I was hoping it would be March, a couple of weeks after getting the kids back to school. I'd even read somewhere it could be as late as June. So I suppose April isn't as bad as it could have been.

"I just hope that if we can come out of lockdown in April then that will be the end of it and we won't go back in for a fourth time.

"But that's still a long time off and we will have people walking around with six inch roots by then.

"I completely understand the situation the country is in and I wouldn't want to be Boris. He is trying his best I suppose.

"But it's a very difficult situation in the hair and beauty industry. We are all trying to support each other on Facebook groups, but it's tough."

Julie, who also has a salon in Tarleton, says she really feels for the bulk of hairdressers who are now self-employed.

"I'm furloughed and thank heavens I've got a husband who is working. But the industry was changing even before Covid and a lot of salon staff are now self-employed.

"And if they haven't been self-employed for more than a year they aren't entitled to anything."
