ancashire County Council is investing £750,000 in bus services to make sure more people have a service they can rely on for regular journeys.

A number of improvements will be made to existing links, particularly in rural areas, and with vital services such as hospitals, as well as increases in frequency of some services where there is strong demand.

The council received the extra funding following a successful bid to the Department for Transport’s ‘A better deal for bus users’ programme.

Among the new routes, which will start on Sunday, July 19 is a new direct service linking the Preston city centre with Fulwood Royal Preston Hospital via the Railway Station, Tom Benson Way, Cottam and Fulwood Lightfoot Lane. The service will operate every 30 minutes during Monday to Saturday daytime.

Other services include restoring Sunday and Bank Holiday services on several Lancaster city service routes and a new Sunday and enhanced weekday service between Preston and Blackburn, via Longridge,

The county council is also introducing a new service from Preston to Fleetwood, via Poulton, as well as revised services between St Annes and Blackpool.

At the time the funding was announced, last month, County Councillor Andrew Snowden, lead member for buses, said: “We’ve made improving public transport one of our top priorities as it’s vital to people’s daily lives and our local economy.

“This new funding will help to build on the investment we’ve already made in restoring links for communities which might otherwise have no or very little public transport, and supports the commercial network to ensure transport connections across the county are as effective as possible.”
