Barclays has confirmed that its Leyland branch in Balfour Court, off Hough Lane, will close in just three months' time, on Friday, January 22, 2021.

It is the latest in a recent exodus of banks from the town, following the departure of RBS in November 2018 and TSB set to close in a couple of weeks.

Barclays said the decision to close its Leyland branch is due to "the role of the physical branch evolving".

Barclays Bank has confirmed that its Leyland branch in Balfour Court, off Hough Lane, Leyland will close on Friday, January 22, 2021.

It said fewer than 10% of transactions are now taking place inside a branch, with the Leyland bank reporting a 33 per cent reduction in counter transactions in the two years to March 2020.

In addition, it said 89 per cent of customers at the branch are also using different ways to bank, including the Barclays app, Telephone Banking, Online Banking and Video Banking.

It has also reminded customers that everyday transactions can still be completed at the Post Office in Hough Lane.

A Barclays spokesman said: "The decision to close a branch is never an easy one. However, customers are increasingly using alternatives to branches to do their banking.

"As a result, we are seeing a sustained fall in branch visits across the UK.

"This is reflected at the Leyland branch where there has been a 33 per cent reduction in counter transactions in the two years to March 2020.

"In addition, 89 per cent of our customers at the branch are also using different ways to bank.

"We will work with our customers and provide alternative options to ensure they can continue to manage their money and receive financial expertise when required."

Barclays said all customers will receive a letter explaining why the branch is closing, and posters will be displayed in branch, whilst staff will be on hand to assist customers with any concerns they may have.

The bank said it will also be "proactively engaging" with local businesses and the wider community to discuss the alternative ways customers will be able to undertake their banking locally.

It said this will include virtual 'tea and teach' sessions for customers wanting to explore digital banking and other alternatives to 'branch based banking'.
