I’ve always liked a Chinese takeaway but often sacrificed my favourite for Significant Other’s preferred curry.

These days however, SO is broadening his horizons and now predominately consumes vegetarian fayre! So it was with great excitement I was granted a Far Eastern treat last Saturday night as we gave Yu’s Garden, Bamber Bridge a try.

Having made our choices from the menu online, we phoned in our order to be told it would be ready in 15 minutes; just enough time for SO to get his coat on and get there!

Waiting for him as he arrived in the shop, the bag was full to bursting with huge, hot portions.

To start, SO had hot & sour soup which was thick, hearty and a spicy winter warmer. It seemed to have a bit of everything in it – including a rather large piece of pork fat which didn’t go down too well!

Meanwhile, I opted for the sesame prawn toast. Two thick rounds of bread with generous topping, they had a nice crunch and weren’t too greasy although they could have done with a little more flavour.

To share we had some vegetable mini spring rolls which were the best of the starters. Lots of lovely little light crispy morsels with a sweet dipping sauce. Yum!

Moving on to the mains, SO had chosen the mixed vegetables in curry sauce with a side of fried rice. This was jam-packed with chunky, crunchy pieces of all kinds of vegetables and the sauce was thick with a mild, spicy flavour.

Not so much a vegetable curry though, it was as described on the menu; vegetables with curry sauce, just like you get on your chips!

My main course was the very unadventurous chicken and ham fried rice. But for ham, read ‘Spam’. A bit of a shock on opening, the rice was covered in huge chunks of the war-time favourite which were far too salty and dominated an otherwise lovely dish. The numerous pieces of chicken were soft and moist and the rice was light and tasty.

Overall it was OK, I quite enjoyed it. SO, on the other hand, might still need further convincing!
