This one out of three ain’t bad

Carnforth is only a small town but Chinese takeaways must be in big demand as there are three in close proximity of each other in the town centre.

Peking is located in an unassuming building in the middle of busy Market Street so I’d never really noticed it before, but handily, a quick Google brought up its full online menu for us to peruse at home.

There was plenty to choose from so we phoned through an order and were given the promise it would be ready in 15 minutes (but we’d have to pick it up as delivery isn’t available.)

We were greeted by a friendly woman who had our order bagged up and ready to go, but the takeaway can’t take card payments, which prompted a dash to the cashpoint to pay up.

Our choices were not very adventurous, but picking our usual favourites can be a good way to test a restaurant against its rivals.

I liked the fact the portions weren’t unmanageably big and could be gulped down in one sitting.

Two servings of crunchy, vegetable-packed spring rolls got us off to a good start.

My black bean chicken with green peppers tasted freshly cooked, with pleasant squares of stir-fried chicken and ample chunks of crunchy pepper.

It did, however, needed an extra dash of soy to bring out the full flavour of the black bean sauce.

My other half had his favourite, sweet and sour chicken balls (above) which were in an enjoyable tangy sauce, but the egg-fried rice was a bit light on egg for my liking.

Peking did the job nicely for a hungry Sunday evening, but didn’t perhaps do enough to stand out from the crowd.

Total bill was £17.
