The story’s author Michael Morpurgo will star in the National Theatre production.

He has previously performed in productions of the show in the West End, New York, Sydney and Toronto, but this will be his first time on this tour.

He will join the cast of 35 actors and 23 puppets on The Lowry’s stage as a Devon farmer in the 137th performance of War Horse in Salford.

The former children’s laureate explains: “I can’t wait to put on my costume and come out on to that stage with them.

“Look for an old fellow in a flat hat, probably overacting, certainly singing his heart out. It’ll be me!”

Michael visited Salford last October, on his 70th birthday, and climbed up into Joey’s saddle for the first time for a canter around The Lowry stage.

His 1982 novel War Horse has been described as an anthem for peace, and tells the powerful story of young Albert, his beloved horse Joey, and the obstacles they overcome, both individually and together.

The show ends its Lowry tour next Saturday.
