Wicked witches keep it tasteful

Inspired by the Hollywood film of the same name this musical is demanding for any group especially an amateur one.

Preston Musical Comedy Society, however, rose to the challenge admirably showing off the musical, acting and technical talents of their members.

Three bored housewives looking for a bit of excitement get rather more than they wish for in the form of stranger to Eastwick town, Darryl Van Horne. Gaz Jenkins as Darryl was excellent in his role as bad guy with sex appeal intent on wakening up the inhabitants.

Under his spell are Alexandra, Jane and Sukie (Louise Anson, Cassandra Webster and Lucy-Ella Smith) who turn from bored housewives to sex sirens living out their sexual fantasies with Darryl and gaining some magical powers along the way.

Representing the conservative sleepy New England town of Eastwick are Felicia and Clyde Gabriel (Liz Procter and David Hodgson) and as Darryl and his “witches” powers grow, their lives become more unpleasant, especially Felicia who has to endure awful bouts of sickness. regurgitating some unpleasant objects until she finally dies.

Young lovers Jennifer Gabriel and Michael Spofford (Rachel Toase and Paul Regan) inadvertently get caught up in the shenanigans and from shy young romantics their characters change dramatically.

Songs from this show aren’t memorable but “Dirty Laundry” by the chorus was excellent.

“Make him Mine” and “Dance with the Devil” did stand out with no shortage of musical talent in the society especially the three “witches” and strongly supported by musical director Helen Harrison.

It was well choreographed by Lorna Cookson and considering the storyline often borders on sleazy, Peter Taylor, director, managed to move the action along well without lingering too much on this aspect .

A special mention to the production team who managed the special effects so professionally.
