Steel city opera success

The infamous 1997 British film, which told the story of unemployed and desperate steelworkers who take to stripping to earn themselves some much needed cash, has been renovated into an Americanised musical written by Terrence McNally.

The production was ably directed by Sarah Stone who used the well-lit stage effectively throughout.

There was a lack of pace in the first half, however the second act quickly picked up and the show seemed at its strongest during the ensemble dance numbers choreographed by Vicki Gallagher.

The principal cast is spirited with Phil Swift at the forefront, commanding the stage as Jerry. Bernard Kennedy gives a strong performance alongside him. Jay Gaskell and Steve Deveney both provide great support and approach a particularly moving moment in act two with much consideration. Des Grant and Andy Lane are excellent in their roles and a special mention must also be given to Harrison Bury playing Jerry’s son Nathan.

There were a couple of undecided accents and rushed lines here and there but the opening night audience appreciated both the humour and the marvellous musical numbers.

They were thoroughly entertained throughout. The show runs through to Saturday.
