Deck the Hall with Boughs of Holly has been a seasonal treat in the ancient venue for the last 15 years but from next Thursday to Saturday it gets a mystery twist with the appearance of Sherlock Holmes and trusted sidekick Dr Watson.

Lancaster playwright Sue McCormick has been commissioned by producer Stephen Tomlin to script an entertainment to compliment and extend the show’s format.

In conjunction with musical arranger Jude Glendinning, Sue will be directing five of the company’s actor/readers, plus female acapella choir Five in a Bar in Deck the Hall…with Holmes & Watson.

The famous fictional detective and his erstwhile biographer relive the adventure of The Blue Carbuncle, assisted by the guests at a traditional Christmas house party. The Victorian themed selection of verse, songs and stories are interwoven with a seasonal mystery, played out in the castle’s historic Shire Hall.

Complementary mulled wine (or orange juice) and mince pies are again served in the interval.
