There are several firsts attached to this year’s production – the debut artistic directorship of Dukes Theatre associate Louie Ingham.

Working with musical director Lee Affen and set and costume designer Rachel Daniels, means this production has a strong contemporary feel and physical flavour, enhanced with both live and recorded music and song.

Action, as usual, is set mainly in the Shire Hall, but also, for the first time, in the old prison side of the landmark building, which only opened its gates to the public in May last year after almost 800 years as a prison.

Directing the region’s acting talent in one of the most extraordinary non-theatrical venues in England is no mean feat, but one that founder producer Stephen Tomlin seems to pull off repeatedly.

This time, the Lancaster-based TV actor and former BBC TV Mastermind Champion has extra surprises up his sleeve with the ninth play he’s produced at the castle.

“Ours will be a no holds barred engagement – physical, mental and spiritual – with one of the most powerful and moving domestic tragedies in the classical repertoire.”

The production runs until March 22. Box Office: 01524 64998 or www.demiparadiseproductions.co.uk
