Schools take on Sweeney Todd

Lancaster grammar schools stage public performances of Sweeney Todd, Stephen Sondheim’s seminal dark masterpiece, next week – complete with a 30-strong cast and 20-piece orchestra.

Updated to post-war London this spine-chilling musical depicts the demon barber of Fleet Street’s savage quest for justice after years of false imprisonment.

Aided and abetted by pie-shop owner, Mrs Lovett, he sets out to avenge the wrongs done to him and his family.

Christian Powles takes the lead role, with Molly Packwood as Miss Lovett, and the cast includes Peter Law, Sophie Elwood, Anna Cookson, Alex McCaragher, Lucie Moore, Max Williams and James Riach.

Sweeney Todd is at the Dukes in Lancaster from Wednesday to Saturday.
