Lettice Douflet brightens up her job as a tourist guide in a stately home by dramatising its dull history with outrageous fantasies until she is caught in the act and dismissed.

Retreating to her Earl’s Court basement flat, she is visited by her old boss, Lotte.

They discover they share a common dislike of modern architecture and style.

Lotte slowly becomes bewitched by Lettice’s romantic view of the world and together they set about reconstructing events from history with disastrous results.

The cast includes Jacquie Wade and Ann Richards in the leading roles, Mike Yates and Ceri Powell. Michele Martin directs.

Preston Drama Club’s February production is The Cemetery Club which is opening at Preston Playhouse Theatre on Wednesday, March 5 until Saturday, March 8 at 7.30pm each evening.

Three recently widowed women visit the cemetery every month to lay flowers on their husbands’ graves and the play is about their different reactions to their new lives alone.

Should they feel they have had enough or should they be seeking new adventures?

For Doris, her husband’s memory is enough for her, and she channels her energy into indignation about the cemetery’s lousy upkeep.

She is horrified at Lucille who sets out to buy a new wardrobe and enthusiastically embraces the dating scene, feeling she deserves it after years of suffering her late husband’s infidelity.

At first, Ida, like Doris, is content with her memories but soon begins to wonder if it might finally be time to say goodbye to the monthly cemetery visit and start a new chapter in her life.

Enter Sam, the neighbourhood butcher, who has lost his wife.

To Lucille, this suddenly eligible bachelor is a possible conquest. To Doris, he’s a scoundrel on the prowl and can’t be trusted. To Ida, he might be the man she’s ready to let into her life.

A delightfully funny, yet moving, comedy that will appeal to people of all ages.

The Broughton Players are looking for amateur theatre groups in the area who might like to enter their forthcoming annual One Act Play Festival which takes place at Preston Playhouse Theatre, Market Street West, Preston, from Wednesday, June 18 to Saturday, June 21.

The aims of the festival are to raise the profile of amateur theatre in the North West, to set high standards in stagecraft and to encourage new directors and producers. Five trophies will be awarded by the adjudicator Sue McKay.
