Household names including Lee Evans, Arthur Smith and Lucy Porter will converge on Kendal Brewery Arts Centre for the annual Freerange Comedy Festival, which takes over the town from May 12 to 18.

The Freerange is famous for staging gigs in imaginative outdoor locations in the Lake District and, in the four years it has been running, has seen shows performed on mountain bikes in Grizedale Forest, on a high-wire tree trek on the shores of Windermere, atop the summit of 321m peak Gummer’s How and on a sea cliff overlooking Morecambe Bay.

This year will see Arthur Smith lead 30 comedy fans on a five-mile comedy ramble along the western shores of Windermere before performing in the historic National Trust property Wray Castle, near Ambleside (Sat 17 May at 1pm).

Comedy Festival organizer Mike Jones said: “This has earned a reputation as a unique event which takes some of the nation’s best-known comedians out of their comfort zone and into the great outdoors.”
