Leeds-born funnyman Billy emerged from the light-entertainment goldmine of Butlins in the mid-1980s and has won just about every comedy award going.

He first came to prominence when he appeared in Central TV’s talent show New Faces, winning his heat and qualifying for the final.

His impact was immediate and he was quickly snapped up for stage and TV appearances, leading to his first series for BBC You Gotta Be Joking.

He has also performed in five children’s Royal Variety shows and three Royal Variety shows.

During the mid-1980s and early 1990s, he also appeared on Tonight at the London Palladium, Through the Keyhole, Blankety Blank, Talking Telephone Numbers, and You Bet.

With the rise of alternative comedy, he found a niche in family-friendly panto while keeping the razor-sharp wit needed to entertain adult-only audiences. The combination paid off, and there are few stages upon which he has not performed.

He’s broken box office records at a number of national theatres including a summer season at Blackpool Grand, and his Christmas panto appearance at Bradford Alhambra took a bank-busting £1.3m.

He even trod the boards of musical theatre appearing alongside Jimmy Osmond in Boogie Nights and followed with a stint as narrator in the Rocky Horror Show.

Combined with acting appearances in TV’s Heartbeat and The Street, he has managed to outlast many of his contemporaries. Contact Box Office on 01772 804444 or www.prestonguildhall.com
