The play follows the London working class Gibbon family from June 1919 until June 1939, “sometimes happy, sometimes sad but always entertaining”.

Directed by Mary Jones and Jackie Calvert, a spokesman for the players said: “Just demobbed after the First World War, Frank Gibbons settles in Clapham with wife Ethel, their children Reg, Queenie and Vi, Ethel’s mother Mrs Flint and Frank’s sister Sylvia.

“They find one of Frank’s army pals is their next door neighbour, and his son soon becomes an admirer of one of Frank’s daughters.

“The life of this respectable working-class family is vividly portrayed over the nineteen years from 1919 to 1937, with its commonness, sterling qualities and humours memorably depicted in what became a classic of its period.”

It starts on Wednesday and runs until Saturday 23 at the Playhouse, curtain up 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £8 concessions, £7 for tickets, call 07790081536 or go online to www.prestonplayhouse.com. Free parking after 7pm – pick a pass up from the box office.
