Grail for Joe son of Joe

Despite a double booking issue leading to a short delay, the audience at the press night of The Monty Python-inspired stage show, ‘Spamalot’ at the Liverpool Empire, simply looked on the bright side.

The musical, “lovingly ripped-off” from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, follows the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table as they gather to head to Camelot, before they are set on a quest to find the Holy Grail by God, this time played by Python member, Michael Palin (via big screen).

And even though star, Joe Pasquale was “indisposed” for this performance, I can’t imagine he was missed.

Jamie Tyler stepped into his shoes with gusto, playing the King of Britain, suitably Python-esque and with great wit and hilarious ad libs. Joe Tracini, known for his roles as Dennis Savage in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks and as DK in BBC Three’s Coming of Age, amped up the comedy in his father’s absence, playing Arthur’s manservant, Patsy, with often scene stealing comic timing.

While Sarah Earnshaw’s diva-like vocals as the Lady of The Lake, blew the roof off the building, particularly during the nod to 80’s power ballads, ‘Find Your Grail.’

Add together energetic dance routines, typical silly British humour, a cross-dressing Prince who would rather sing about being rescued than marry his betrothed and the infamous Black Knight scene cleverly adapted for the stage, and you’ve got all the ingredients of a great night out.

Bang your coconuts all the way to the Empire before the company hoofs it out of the city on May 16.
