Giving entertainers a Platform

The Platform in Morecambe is another regional venue with a strong line-up of entertainment for its autumn-winter programme.

The new season begins this weekend, at the resort’s Seaside Festival, with Thanks for the Memory: They Played the Winter Gardens featuring rare film clips of comedy heroes, singers and music hall acts from the Edwardian era to the 1950s.

An Evening with Lee Mead sees the winner of Any Dream Will Do and star of West End hits Joseph, Wicked and Legally Blonde, bringing his solo show to Morecambe on Thursday September 26.

There’s more musical theatre from the Morecambe Warblers (Youth Productions) when they present Bugsy Malone. High voltage rock and roll tribute acts include Livewire, re-creating AC/DC and ZZ Tops! Or Whole Lotta Led celebrating the 40th anniversary of Houses of the Holy, the band will perform the album in its entirety and several other classic Led Zeppelin songs.

Recreating the legendary music of Queen will be tribute band, Magic.

On Saturday, November 2, dazzling costumes and authentic musicianship come together for a night with Beatlemania. Traditional brass band music comes from concerts by Pilling Silver Jubilee Silver Band and Morecambe Brass Band. Comedy at the Platform is served up courtesy of Alexei Sayle on September 23 and Hal Cruttenden on November 23.

Michael Portillo will be talking about his extraordinary life story in Life: A Game of Two Halves on Saturday October 5.

Jazz fans can hear the James Taylor Quartet play their latest album Closer to the Moon on Saturday, September 28.

Later with Jools Netherland is a mini festival of indie/rock/folk/acoustic/tex mex/country and classic rock on Friday, October 18. Or swoon along to An Evening of Frank Sinatra featuring the Moonlight Serenade Orchestra the following night.

If the king of rock and roll is more to your taste get those blue suede shoes on and enjoy One Night of Elvis on Saturday October 26.

Keep the little ones amused during October half term with How to Catch a Star on Monday October 28.

One of Ireland’s best-loved entertainers, Dominic Kirwan, is coming to the Platform to perform his latest concert My Ireland on Friday November 8.

And celebrity magician Paul Daniels is showcasing his First Farewell Tour; From Legend to Leg End on Saturday November 30. Catch him before he hangs up his magic wand, as always accompanied by the lovely Debbie McGee.

In December, two talented folk bands are performing. The Houghton Weavers promise a fun and friendly evening of music and anecdotes whilst Steeleye Span, one of the most successful British folk rock bands ever, are performing on Saturday December 14.

Jools Netherland’s Big Xmas Night Out sees his show band serve up two seasonal party nights and the venue’s traditional pantomime will be Aladdin from Boxing Day to December 30. See www.lancaster.gov.uk/platform.
