Children set to stage military honours service

Pupils at Ribchester’s Salesbury School experienced ‘life on the front line’ during the First World War with a trip to the Museum of Lancashire and Fulwood Barracks.

Action Northwest to commemorate the lives of 11 old boys from Blackburn Orphanage who were killed in the Great War. The children will be taking part in a service of remembrance with military honours on Sunday, July 13, at 2pm at St Peter’s Church, Salesbury, led by the Rev Martin Duerden.

They will then plant 11 trees in a new memorial garden at the site of the old Blackburn Orphanage, the offices of Child Action Northwest, on Whalley Road, Wilpshire. The service will be attended by the granddaughter of James Dixon, the founder of Blackburn Orphanage, Mrs Nancy Hill with her daughter Miss Beth Hill. Project organiser Harriet Roberts said: “The events organised at the Museum of Lancashire and the actors at Fulwood Barracks really brought the project to life.”
