Bright and breezy piece of Cole

It’s delightful, it’s de-lovely and it’s definitely worth a watch!

The members of St Annes Parish Operatic Society are to be congratulated on a fun-filled production of Cole Porter’s witty 1930s musical ‘Anything Goes’.

The energy and excitement of the big song and dance numbers, choreographed by Elaine Morrison, keep the production going at the right pace and director Alison Thornton ensures her performers draw out all of the comedy in the script.

Andrew Would gives a charming portrayal as Billy Crocker and, alongside a convincing performance from Steph Ball as love interest Hope Harcourt, sings beautifully.

Dave Swift is very amusing as Moonface Martin, a gangster, posing as a reverend, forever peeved by his depressing ranking as America’s 13th Most Wanted Man.

Suzi McQuiggan (Evangeline Harcourt) and Bernard Kennedy (Elisha Whitney) also provide top-level comic performances.

The principal cast are well-supported by the chorus, each member with their own unique character.

But Keri Ward is without a doubt the heart, soul (and lungs) of the show as evangelist-turned-nightclub singer Reno Sweeney.

Her vocals were outstanding throughout and she is to be congratulated on a fine performance.

A bright set, superb costumes, effective lighting and sound and Helen Harrison’s fantastic orchestra all contribute to a toe-tapping performance. The show runs through to Saturday.
