I like a traditional curry house favourite as much as the next diner – lamb bhuna, biryani, even a chicken tikka masala all find favour with me.

But sometimes it’s nice to find something completely different on an Indian takeaway menu, and this is exactly what Preston’s Cinammon Spice offers.

Of course the old favourites are there too, but the menu also boasts some truly special dishes – which happily included my nariyal.

Consisting of the river fish tilapia cooked in a delicious sauce of coconut milk, mustard seeds, curry leaves and green chilli, it was light but bursting with flavour.

My partner was equally happy with his lamb tikka chettinadh, which saw nice big chunks of marinaded lamb cooked in a sauce that involved poppy seeds, peppercorns, yoghurt, lime, red chilli and coconut – it had more of a firey spice kick than mine, but was equally delicious.

To accompany it we had two vegetarian side dishes – a beautiful saag aloo made with fresh spinach and a mushroom bhaji.

Keema naan and pilau rice finished off the meal, which came to a reasonable £22.80.

This cost also included some free poppadoms, which were freshly made, still slightly warm and not greasy, unlike the tough, stale-tasting discs that so many Indian restaurants think are acceptable.

So Cinammon scored highly for us, both on the quality of the food and the creativity of the menu.

As Arnie would have said if he’d had a curry this good – we’ll be back.
