Preston stars support Jenkins

The society has been running for 60 years and this is its biggest performance yet.

Preston Musical Comedy Society was formed in 1953 performing its first production The Desert Song at The Royal Hippodrome in 1954.

The society has called many theatres in Preston home since that first production, including The Gaurmont, The Empire and The Charter Theatre and the Playhouse.

Many a famous name has passed through the society over the years, including Alfie Boe, John Thomson, Tupele Dorgu, Jessica Pieterson (nee Taylor), Sophie McDonnell and Julie Atherton.

After this weekend’s extravaganza at Hoghton Tower, the society will then focus on its Diamond Celebration Year autumn show.

The singers will be taking on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love at the Charter Theatre in Preston from September 17-20.

Based on the novella of the same name by David Garnett, the piece focuses on the romantic entanglements of actress Rose Vibert, her admiring fan Alex Dillingham, his underage cousin Jenny, his uncle George, and George’s mistress, sculptor Giulietta Trapani, over a period of 17 years. Its famous songs include Seeing is Believing, I Want to be the First Man You Remember, Anything But Lonely and the hit Love Changes Everything.

The 33-year-old Welsh classical singer Jenkins headlines Symphony at the Tower.

She will be supported by regular collaborator Anthony Inglis and the National Symphony Orchestra at the much-anticipated concert to raise funds for St Catherine’s Hospice.

Global superstar James Blunt is the star of tonight’s show.

The singer-songwriter – who shot to fame in 2005 with number 1 hit You’re Beautiful – will be performing tracks from his latest album Moon Landing, featuring number two hit Bonfire Heart.
